How many data plans do we need?

With the recent launch of the iPad and more specifically the Canadian launch of the 3G enabled iPad, I started thinking about the current offering of mobile data plans. And no, I do not intent do go off on a rant on pricing. (I’ll save that for another time.)  My pondering was swaying more towards practicality.

As mobile data has evolved into a faster, more robust technology, its integration has started to explode. I truly don’t think we have even scratched the surface of new technologies with embedded mobile data. As of right now you can easily get 3G enabled smart phones, netbooks, tablets (iPad), and even vehicles like the new Audi have 3G enabled media systems.  As it currently stands, if you were to own all of the above mentioned device, you would be expected to have an individual data plan from a mobile carrier for each device. Each plan would also have its own monthly allocation of data usage and cannot be shared. Something has to change with this model.

We are only going to see more and more devices hit the market that are able to take advantage of the high speed mobile networks, and requiring a data plan for each is not a scalable plan.  At some point the carriers are going to have to allow bundling of multiple devices on a given account to share the data bucket. Or at least make tethering more of an open option to share data amongst several devices. Maybe this is already in the works in the background, but it is something that I assume will be more of a hot topic going forward.

I personally carry an iPhone and a Blackberry, each with their own data plan. I have a wifi only iPad that I just tether to my iPhone if I need data in a pinch. What does everyone else think about this? How many data plans do you have?

Site has moved

This site has moved to a new location and is no longer hosted on an old P3 generation box. The web server and database seem to be functioning much quicker now. The only downside is that I do not have native IPv6 support yet. Hopefully soon.

All hail to the scotch egg

Thanks to thisiswhyyourefat.com for this one. I am a huge fan of the scotch egg, and it reminded me of the upcoming Toronto FC season, since it is one of the specialty foods available there.

For those who don’t know what a scotch egg is, see below:
